SUMMER SCHOOL ALPBACH 1995

July 25 - August 3, 1995

HORIZON 2000 PLUS:

European Prime Targets in Astronomy

and Solar System Exporation

The Alpbach Summer School 1995 was being held under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Minister of Science, Research and Arts, Dr. Rudolf Scholten

PURPOSE

The topic of the Summer School 1995 was "European prime targets in astronomy and solar system exploration". The courses were focused on the Cornerstone Missions of the ESA Horizon 2000 Plus programme in these fields, recently elaborated by the European scientific community for the period until the year 2016.

Two parallel courses were held, namely:

Course A: "The Inner Planets" (Mercury, Venus, the Earth and Mars) and

Course B: "Astrometry and Interferometry" (including submilliarcsec-astronomy)

During the morning sessions lectures were given by well known European scientists on subjects related to the two fields. Engineering aspects and technical studies were presented in the afternoon sessions.

The afternoon presentations were followed by workshops under the guidance of tutors in which the participants were actively engaged in the design of a Mercury orbiter (Course A under the leadership of Marcello Coradini and George Scoon/ESA/ESTEC) and an astrometry/interferometry mission (Course B under the leadership of Serge Volonte and Robin Laurance/ESA/ESTEC).

Common lectures were given in the SCHRÖDINGERSAAL (upper floor). Course A was held in the SCHRÖDINGERSAAL (upper floor), Course B in the WALLNÖFERSAAL (lower floor).
